"Against all Odds"...

This is the theme for Makhaya Ntini's benefit year. And an apt one too. He will have something he once believed was for "white people only"...

This, and some other interesting stories emerged at the Wanderers Tuesday evening, when Ntini's benefit year was announced. Like this one:

During his first visit to Australia, he nearly fell on his back when a platter of crayfish was placed in front of him at dinner. Relates Ntini: "We black people and seafood are not really great friends...

..."It was a crayfish and to make things worse, I could not speak proper English. So I had to show with my hands that I would never eat anything such as that. Eventually they brought me some chicken, which I knew."

And how Hansie told him to just "give it his best..no matter what happens"...when he was first selected to play for the Proteas.

Two limited-overs matches will be part of his benefit year. They will be played shortly before the Twenty20 World Cup tournament next year.

In one of those matches, a World XI will play a South African team.

Against the odds indeed. The once bare-footed cattle herder has made it big. Congrats Makhaya.

Was it Ntini who was falsely accused of rape?

If it was it shows he has great mental strength to bounce back from such a thing. He was a late developer but he has proven he is a quality bowler over the years.

Yes. And that was a very bad time for him and his family as I recall...

Quality bowler indeed. Last year he carried SA's bowling attack just about single-handedly against the Aussies.

he absolutely is quality - he's got better (at least taken more wickets) when most pundits were half-writing him off as a one trick pony. loads of respect.

although wary to change the theme (but you mention the aussies) - nel did a very fine job away in Oz...and was dropped as a reward!
