An interesting idea Doink, well done
Without giving it much thought at this stage (sorry, Sunday lunch time), surely a World XI A-team would be very close to the Australia A-team, and maybe have even more Aussie representatives than the 'senior' World XI? This is because we know most of the Aussie second string, from their exploits in County and State cricket, and the reserve players from other countries do not have the same pedigree as MacGill, Hussey, Elliott, Law (
I think he qualifies for two countries now though), Haddin et al. In fact, I would it unusual if all six batting spots were not taken by Aussies, since their next-best is really that good! Guys like Bevan and Katich could not get into their first XI, when they would walk into all other Test teams.
Of course, this could be made more interesting by adding in the WAT A-team selection criteria, which stipulate that at the time of selection, the player should:
- have played less than six Tests, and
- be under 30 years old.
Under these criteria, many of the Aussie second-strong would be disqualified, and hence we would get more 'international' players.
