Wavell Hinds retires from WI cricket

Radiojamaica.com... today's news... today | One, Hinds, International, West, Indies | Wavel Hinds retiring - The RJR Sports Centre understands that the form...

Quote:
The RJR Sports Centre understands that the former Jamaica Captain Wavell Hinds, who was for months touted by many as a future West Indies skipper, is set to retire from the international and regional scene.

The 31-year old told team mates of his decision in an emotional setting after Jamaica went down by nine wickets to Trinidad and Tobago in the Stanford Twenty/20 final in Antigua on Sunday.

Why?

You might not like him and he was never going to be world class but that's no reason to say good riddance.

I repeat, good riddance - the West Indies is never going to recover its former place in cricket with that type of cricketer, so the faster we get rid of them and replace them with test-class talent, the better.

Please, can someone tell me where to find this talent?

i don't think he is great player but definitely not the worst ,he is more than handy for a team like Current Windies when compare to the likes of Morton or smiths
he got gentlest of medium pace with acceptable batting technique for International matches

Of the talent we actually do have Hinds was one of the better ones.

I notice you were recently promoting Ganga (who is inferior) as a batsman.

Seeing as you yourself just admit you don't know where this Test class talent is, then what is the point of throwing out the baby with the bathwater?

Test class talent is created and nurtured from youngsters with cricketing talent (of which Hinds used to be one).

It doesn't grow on a tree.

Hinds was messed around by selectors whilst inferior players like Morton have been allowed to perform to an even lower standard. Hinds, at least inconsistently, showed he could perform at that level.

It is funny though that you say, "the faster we get rid of them and replace them with test-class talent, the better".

I thought you didn't support WI anymore?

Ninjaman mentions talent not growing on trees - well, in the West Indies we get as close to that as possible, because most, if not all, of the greats received little or no formal coaching.

Call me one who lives in the past, but these fellas who represent the WI have no test talent - except for Chanderpaul, of course. He is the only one who would have got a look-in on WI teams of the past.

I mention 'we' because I was born in, and live in the West Indies - but I support good cricket - which the West Indies does not play. When ever they win a match - it is because the other side played badly and not because the WI played well.

As for Ganga - he demonstrated outstanding potential when he scored centuries in consecutive tests against Australia of all people, and I believe the environment of a bunch of losers like the West Indian team has done much harm to his confidence and ability. Not having close contact with him and his team, it is difficult to ascertain this as a fact.

Not only is the West Indies team a bunch of losers - the WICBC has a lot to answer for - they have a village and curry-favour mentality in their approach to the administration of the game in the region. They demonstrate the typical West Indian attitude of picking men based more on 'one of the boys' qualifications than pure merit.

I am completely fedup of all this damned nonsense and have no interest in watching the West Indies play; and if a two tiered system should be introduced in tests, the WI may have to take their place in the second rung.

I think Ganga has to take a lot of the blame himself. Scoring back-to-back centuries against Australia is an outstanding feat, but other than that he hasn't done anything of note- ever. And as I said in the "Two Ideas to Improve Test Cricket" thread, he was actually the worst of the batsmen in the team staistically- so as you might call him, the biggest loser.

And when was the last time we produced a great?

Two decades now seeing as Lara is aproduct of the mid to late 80s.

The "taklent2 is still there but the cricketing world into which they now enter has changed.

Proving that plucking anything off trees with little or no formal coaching does not cut it as the game is today.

You might have 1 or even 2 but a good team they do not make.

The better part of Lara's last decade or so in cricket would show that.

Well you don't have to be living in the past to notice that!!

They are ranked #8 and will be at #8 for some time (far from #7 and very far from #9). Their lack of Test talent is self evident.

Top line sports, not just cricket, is littered with talented who fail to produce on the highest stage and the average and modestly talented who find a way to maximise their potential.

However, it is irrelevant which one of our players NOW would have got into a team back THEN. Once again, living in the past gets us nowhere.

What we need is to produce players worthy of challenging their Aussie, English, Indian counterparts of now.

The Test match we just won in South Africa was because we played well.

And Hinds has also showed outstanding potential. He has 5 Test centuries. Furthermore, he offers something to the one day team too.

Check out his bowling performances in the semi-final and final of the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy which WI actually won!

He could have been persevered with as a #7 or #8 for far longer than we did with the Cowlasher Dwayne Smith

The same environment you think has destroyed Ganga can also be used in Hinds' defence.

I'd take Hinds over Ganga anyday but you are probably different and that's no problem.

However, you are willing to make concessions for Ganga but for Hinds (who outperformed Ganga in both forms of the game) your response is good riddance??

A criticism levelled none more so at Ganga whose godfather for many of the times people wondered why he was still being picked was none other than team selector Joey Carew.

I have no idea why Ninjaman is going on and on about Ganga and Hinds - they are both inferior test players playing on a side that will take anybody.

One cannot refer to isolated good performances and judge a player to be a general success. Good bowling or batting must be consistent in order for it to benefit the team one belongs to.

And for goodness' sake, don't use that word 'potential' to me - men have been playing for the WI for years and been described as having potential - so when does this potential turn in to real and lasting ability? Sarwan has been playing for the West Indies for years, and he still averages well under forty, and people still talk of potential.

I suppose people like you and others have to cling to that type of player and praise them because their standards are low, and correspondingly their supporters' standards are also low - a score of 35 from these guys is an excuse to pop the champagne...
