I managed to stay up till the very small hours of the morning and watch the final live. It was the single best Twenty20 match I have ever witnessed and, surprising to me, was how many 'proper' cricket shots were played in the final considering the limited exposure to the shortest game at this level the batsmen will have had.

Ramnaresh Sarwan played a perfect innings, he had been out of form all the way through the competition and he took his time in dispatching the bad balls to the boundary and picking off any easy singles. Then, just as Dowlin had gone off injured, he opened up with a six and four which were two perfectly timed strokes and placed perfectly. It really helped get the motor going for Guyana to setup the final over.

It sounds like a complete contrast to the hopeless Twenty/20 competition New Zealand is having.

The final was, really, the only competetive match that went right down to the wire throughout the whole tournament. Previous to this game there were far more poor shots played, far more wayward deliveries, more poor cricket basically. It was the same with the English competition, not to the same extent but you really have to wait to the semi-finals before you get the truly competetive cricket.

Its a bit of a shame, in a way it de-grades the cricketing standard in general.

i too watched stanford 20/20(only highlights) it needs atleast 3 to 5 year to become the way it is played in england(more professionally played)
but still a very good initiative for the winieds cricket
yes, there were many poor shots played and balls bowled and catches dropped but the crowd support was amazing
most of the matches there were packed stadium with traditional calypso music
in india also there is 20/20 cup it is called bradman cup(started in 2005) played between 6 teams from various parts of india(last year 2 australian domestic teams played,NSW,Aus-A)at bangalore under lights
it was also a good competition
last year there were more indian international cricketers particpated compared to this year
but definitely down the road in year 2020 the 20/20 cricket will be a money spinner for all the cricket playing nations

I think its important that nations don't take the 20/20 format too seroiusly, it should really be just a cricket festival really, a fun day out for the players and spectators alike.

So, any news yet on when this years tournament will take place? We had full coverage on television last year, but if it co-incides with the SA domestic season, we may not get coverage.

The latest news is a planned return in 2008.

Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico will apparently be invited.
