Naz,

Scyld Berry had a column in the Sunday Telegraph last weekend saying that he would not be touring England. I nearly dropped my bacon sandwich when I read this. Apparently he had one friend at the WICB and they ensured that he was made captain for the world cup after the selectors (Andy Roberts, Greenidge etc) wanted Sarwan.

As the guy on the WICB was leaving, it was expected that he would not be selected for the tour party to England, so he has clearly walked off rather than suffer the disgrace of not being selected (something Viv had to endure when they refused to pick him for the 92 world cup after he retired from Tests at the Oval).

He has gone - I am gutted having believed that this tour would give us one last chance to see him.

The full story to that actually was Viv had spent most of his captaincy using his influence to push Richie Richardson, an extremely withdrawn character (similar to Shiv), as the next captain of the WI over his own VC, Desmond Haynes, the shoe-in for the job.

When Viv retired from the Test game, he made himself available for one last go at the 1992 World Cup.
Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown and Richie, with captaincy now in hand, decided that such a strong personality as Viv could not be around the squad or he would forever be in his shadow.
So he ensured that Viv was not selected and the rest is history.

It's very sad Milo......I didn't realise the WICB could afford the luxury of forcing out their best batsman. Still, they clearly know best............

Looking forwards..............who are the best genuine prospects in West Indies domestic cricket at the moment ? Nice to see Daren Powell having a good World Cup.........are Simmons and Pollard the real deal ? How best to bring talent forward in the West Indies ?
