I'm not so sure the Windies will be all doom and gloom once Lara retires.
Okay, he can never be replaced as a batsman but I think someone else could be a better captain (tactically certainly) which might just make up for the likely 10+ runs lost per innings off the bat.
Also I think the Gayle/Ganga partnership can only get stronger the more they play together (especially given Gayle's recent change of attitude at the crease). Sarwan will return to number 3 at some point and should provide consistent scoring. Shiv Chanderpaul has been in superb form of late and, since the burden of captaincy was lifted from his shoulders, has been able to concentrate on his batting again. Also let's not forget Dwayne Bravo who is able to play like a proper batsman and make big scores, not just a lower order slogger.
Part of the pace bowling department worries me; Jerome Taylor has made a fine start to his international career and should be around for years. Corey Collymore is the West Indian Glenn McGrath at the moment and, barring injuries, be around for the next five years at least. However, the third/fourth seamer spots are up for grabs on a consistent basis and no-one is currently sticking their hands up and performing.
Whoever replaces Lara will certainly never be able to make up for Lara's genius as a batsman, no matter what his replacement does for West Indian cricket.
