| I don't think the Windies would have bowled out England in that Antigua test match if they had 700 overs to bowl, to be frank. The only way they could win was if England made mistakes and the longer they were in the field, the more probable it was that they would make mistakes. And I still think tiredness was the only reason England were bundled out cheaply in the first innings on that featherbed of all featherbeds. |

| Well, at the end of the game, the WI only required 4 or 5 more wickets to win the game so therefore another 45 minutes of bowling could have been enough. However, I agree that the many reason England were bowled out so cheaply in the 1st innings was due to tiredness.

| yeah, that was my point. I think it was a combination of reasons for Lara choosing to bat on. Obviously, one of them was the magical 400 mark, but I think he also knew the strength (or the lack of it) of his bowling line up and decided to give them the best shot possible, which was to tire England out as much as they could.. |

| You speak from the heart. When the WICB was looking for a new coach, Bennett King and Greg Chappell were in the running. Chappell lost out because his methods would require a complete restructuring of the game in order for players to be brought through the system from age 12-13 and into the senior side or in contention for that side. Thus, by the time a player reaches the senior side, he already has the fundamentals and is now just in a position to apply them. The coach will have to do nothing more than "fine tune" the player so he can realise his potential. Also, any player picked will be in a position taht he knows there are quite a few players waiting to take his spot should he mess up. This is mirrored in how Australia do it. There is no one single part of how they do it that has got them to the top. It is a complete system which is turning out quality players of a damn good standard. But the board is myopic and wants quickfire results and so hired King. He know must work with players who have talent but not all the fundamentals and have to waste time trying to coach the players he is given in things they actually should already learn. Since not much is being done on the grassroots level as at the top level, this will be a never ending circle as the players who come up through the WI system will contiue to have these flaws. Ryan Hinds can't buy a wicket or a run in international cricket, yet won the top all rounder award in the WI recently. When Michael Clarke was about 12-15 I bet you I could find several WiI players of the same age better than him. By the time he makes the Australia side, he has flown past all his WI contemporaries and if any of them make the WI side, they still need coaching on stuff that no Aussie looking to play grade cricket doesn't know. As for Browne, his continued selection highlights just how dunce the board tends to be. Ok he was there when we won the ICC Trophy but that is 7 months ago and we remember him for a batting exploit not keeping. He has butterfingers and is never going to get better at 34. Ramdin is a better gloveman and Baugh is good enough to make the side as a batsman. Not many West Indians not in the side have a FC average over 40. Collymore must have shares in the WICB. That can only explain his continual selection. |
