Sorry I missed last night's discussions. I'm happy with the final XI.

It was me who wasn't convinced with Smith; though he does add some experience to the team, so I'm willing to accept him. I have to say, this has generally been a decent exercise in discussing some of the better players in county cricket; and its good to see that the majority of the players were involved in my player of the year polls. Some of the winners - Dimtri Mascarenhas (all-rounder of the year), Jon Lewis (bowler of the year), Ian Bell (highest placed eligible player in batsman of the year) are in the team. As there were many more participants in these polls, this shows that some of the players would have been supported by the majority of players.

The main problem with the thread is that sometimes people's comments get lost in the maelstrom. For example, when I returned, I suggested Davies thinking that nobody had mentioned him, when actually Statto had already raised his name.

The main thing is though, that the final team should be very competitive and should be able to take on teams of a decent standard (I'm happy that they'd beat Zim and Bang 9 times out of 10, and that they could give some of the other full international teams a decent game)

WAT England A 2004

After receiving the final views of everybody including Andy and GW this morning I can sign-off the WAT England A XI as:

Code:
1. Jefferson (Div 2) RHB
2. Hutton (Div 1) LHB
3. Smith (Div 1) RHB
4. Pieterson (Div 2) RHB, Right Arm Off Break
5. Bell (Div 1) RHB, Right Arm Medium
6. Collingwood (Div 2) RHB, Right Arm Medium
7. Wallace (wkt) (Div 2) LHB
8. Mascarenhas (Div 2) RHB, Right Arm Fast Medium
9. Harrison (Div 2) RHB, Right Arm Fast Medium
10. Lewis (Div 1) RHB, Right Arm Medium
11. Keedy (Div 1) LHB, Slow Left Arm Orthodox
Some names link to an interview with the player. Click the player's name to see their interview.

Somebody mentioned whether a captain should be chosen? I feel that should be left up to the team management and players to decide. They would know better than us who they would like to be led by.

So, how did our selectors go? How many of their first XI made it into the final team?

Mike/Andy - would it be a good idea to specify which county teams each of the 11 WAT England A team members play in?

Looks like a good cross section across some of the less glamourous counties actually, having performed the request!

I know I am a bit late on this one but as a Durham boy I thought I could fill in some info on Mark Davies for anyone interested.
Mark is a FM bowler who is still really recovering from a very serious car accident which resulted in a collapsed lung among other injuries. His form last year was stunning but the effect of the weakened Durham bowling attack missing both the overseas bowler and Steve Harmison was to put way too much pressure on Mark and result in him missing the end of the season. I would not be comfortable in seeing Mark at his present pace in the England setup, given that he is still maturing and still recovering from a serious injury that pace may come later in which case he will be worth watching, but the tip from up here is definately Liam Plunkett, the lad has real potential, pace and still only 19! Oh he is a half decent batsman as well.

Thanks for the news on Mark Davies, cantplaycantalk. We wish him a full and speedy recovery. Thanks also for the tip on Liam Plunkett.

Can I just ask what the World A-team concept is? I am new to the forum (yesterday) and I was just looking for a busy cricket forum. Apologies if the concept is discussed elsewhere - if so please just point me in the right direction. Also this England one seems nearly a year old? Is it time for a new one?
