| I dont remember chapple in his younger days, so i cant compare him to that and likewise i dont really know what the england situation was then, all i know is he nearly got a chance last year to replace flintoff but didnt. Fast bowlers apparently peak at about 27 so there is time for hogg to quicken up but I think that if he is going to play for england he needs to be playing first class cricket and if he cant get in the team he probably isnt there yet. He may be a late developer (which i hope he is) but if people generally need a couple of years to establish themselves before playing for england, he will need to break into a side soon before it is too late and i see no reason why a prospective england bowling allrounder shouldnt get a place in any county sidebe it lancs or whoever. |

His batting performances against the top three sides in Div 2 were 64, 131, 78, 9, 98, 0 for an avg of 63.3 batting at 6. In one match against the Div 2 winner Nottinghamshire he took 9 wickets for 154. Last edited by Mike : 04-10-2004 at 09:53 AM. |

| 1. Wagh 2. Newman 3. Bell 4. Shah 5. Pietersen 6. Swann 7. Wallace 8. Franks 9. Harrison 10. Lewis 11. Keedy I am prepared to be persuaded that this side is a little light on batting (especially as all of the batsmen other than Newman can, I believe, provide some occasional bowling). This could be remedied by including Prior as the keeper at 6 and dropping Swann down to 7, but I wanted Wallace in the side to keep to the various spinners and to stand up to the medium pacers when required. Newman is included ahead of Jefferson on the basis that I wanted a left/right handed opening partnership (and he is also the only left hander in the top 6). |

SA Newman 24yo 43.03 9c, - Impressed in first full season averaging 44.9 against the top sides in Div 1. (86 18 28 55 56 87 0 31 9 13 111) 3. IR Bell 22yo 71.33 6c, - Huge improvement from last year averaging 89.5 against the top sides in Div 1. (12 34 31 129 49 155 96no 121) 4. KP Pietersen 24yo 53.6 17c, - Has consistently averaged over 50 in last 3 County seasons. Only played 3 innings against the top sides in Div 2 but averaged 46.3 (70 49 20) 5. DJG Sales 26yo 61.50 18c, - Steadily improved over last 3 seasons. Further improvement expected. Averaged 65.6 against the top 3 sides in Div 1. (70 12 8 76 61no 3 92 72no) 6. ID Blackwell 62.08 3c Econ 2.81 - Stands out with best avg, most wickets, best bowling economy than any other batting all-rounder. Fielding needs to improve. 7. MJ Prior 22yo 37.04 21c 8. PJ Franks 25yo 38.12 2c Econ 3.66 - Right Arm Fast Medium - Left Hand Bat. Bowling much improved in the 2004 season. Averaged 38.3 with the bat and 29.5 with the ball against the top sides in Div 2. Against the top sides 11 of 15 wickets were top 5 batsmen. (Batting: 45 32 54 30 11 6 52no - Bowling: 1-45 3-43 3-35 7-72 1-45 0-102 0-21 0-80) 9. AD Mascarenhas 26yo 21.68 8c Econ 2.58 - Right Arm Fast Medium - RHB. Can bat and is a very economical bowler. Improved wicket-taker in 2004 season. 10. Against the top 3 sides took 15 of 25 wickets of top 5 batsmen. My concern is medium pace and skiddy action may not be effective in all conditions. Requires seaming conditions and swing. (3-21 5-46 1-43 7-72 2-120 3-59 3-89 1-81) 11. G Keedy 29yo 7.50 7c Econ 2.86 - Slow Left Arm Orthodox - LHB. Had best County season in 2004. | Looking at everyone's list of 11 it seems to me that England A are lacking depth in the bowling department. We seem to have good batsmen, wicketkepers, and all-rounders coming through but bowling lacks depth. The greatest challenge will be to decide how much bowling depth we need to win matches against other A-Teams. Does anyone else want to submit their final eleven, otherwise we'll start the negotiations for the WAT final 11 tomorrow? The final 11 should be a mixture of youth and experience as the side should be picked to win against other A-Teams in a tournament situation. The team should be as balanced as possible but the players should also merit inclusion in the squad irrespective of balance. |
