The above list of players qualify for the England A-Team based on:
1. Under 30 years of age
2. Played no more than 5 Test matches
3. Is a regular member of a County team ie minimum 8 matches played in Frizzell County Championship this year.

I'll do a list from Division 2 in a couple of days. The first phase will be to create a Provisional Squad of 30 players. Each member who wishes to participate will need to list their 30 top players from one to thirty. Choose players to fill the categories below in the approximate proportion I have given. Eventually, the Eng A-Team will have 5 batsmen, 1 batting all-rounder, 1 wicketkeeper, 1 bowling all-rounder and 3 specialist bowlers.

11 bat (1-5)
5 bat/bowl (6)
3 wkt (7)
3 bowl/bat (8)
8 bowl (9-11)

Here's your chance to be a World A-Team selector. Using the following criteria a total of 92 players from both divisions have qualified for consideration to be chosen in the Provisional Squad of 30 and a Final 11.

Criteria:
1. Under 30 years of age
2. Played no more than 5 Test matches
3. Is a regular member of a County team ie minimum 8 matches played in Frizzell County Championship this year.

Under this criteria Paul Collingwood is omitted since he only played 6 FC matches this year. However, if you think we should make an exception in his case then add him to your Provisional Squad and we'll see how much support he has for inclusion in the Final 11. Ed Joyce has not qualified to play for England, yet, and is omitted on that basis.

Chris Read is currently England's reserve keeper as indicated by his inclusion in the tour squad to South Africa but neither he nor James Foster qualify for this A-Team since both have played more than five Test matches. Gareth Batty is seen as England's reserve spinner as indicated by his inclusion in the squad to tour South Africa. He may also be selected for this A-Team.

The A-Team we choose will contain players who have demonstrated a high level of skill and consistency at First-Class level and are capable of progressing to the next level as future Test players.

Please choose 30 players for the Provisional Squad. 11 batsmen to fill the top 5 batting positions, 5 batting all-rounders to fill the number 6 position, 3 wicketkeeper for number 7, 3 bowling all-rounders to fill the number 7 postion, 8 bowlers to fill 9-11.

List their names and designate which group they belong in. Also rank the list from best at number 1 to worst at number 30.

All the lists will be tallied and then we'll vote by poll for the Final 11.

GW's Lunchtime Picks - Provisional squad

Batsmen

1. U Afzaal - scored heavily this season, able to play sheet anchor role.
2. O Shah - great technique but needs to sort out attitude.
3. E Smith - consistent run scoring over past 2 seasons.
4. M Wagh - looks to have the technique to succeed at the highest level, opener.
5. I Bell - looked to the manor born on test debut, scintillating form this season.
6. W Jefferson - another opener, scored well this year after difficult second season.
7. K Pietersen - consistent heavy scorer for 2-3 years, slight concern over form this season, off spinner.
8. J Hildreth - good first proper season should be rewarded.
9. S Newman - not a player I like (too much of the 'surrey strut' for my liking) but the stats show he had a good season.
10. D Sales - too early to write off such a heavy scorer at 26.
11. G Muchall - always seems to play well in difficult circumstances in brittle Durham batting lineup.

Batting All-Rounders

12. A Gidman - highly talented, maybe needs to start delivering more often.
13. J Dalrymple - spinning alternative to medium pacers, bowls more regularly than Pietersen.
14. P Collingwood - a batsman who can turn his arm over rather than an allrounder but superb fielder.
15. R Clarke - another identified talent who needs to start delivering more often.
16. I Blackwell - turned in some good performances with bat and ball this season, needs to work on fitness.

Wicketkeepers

17. M Prior - best batsman of keepers selected.
18. S Adshead - keeping has looked very competent when I have seen him this season, good stats with the bat.
19. M Wallace - best keeper selected, decent batsman hampered by being required to open the batting this season.

Bowling All-Rounders

20. R Martin-Jenkins - consistent performer over several seasons.
21. G Swann - another highly talented player who could have a better attitude, move to Notts might help.
22. P Franks - seems to have begun to fulfil early promise this season.

Bowlers

23. G Keedy - attacking SLA bowler, consistent wicket taker (where was Jason Brown this season?).
24. J Lewis - great season, been the lynchpin of Gloucs attack in recent years.
25. J Ormond - talented, has apparently lost weight.
26. D Mascarenhas - great season, has been mentioned in dispatches for several years now.
27. D Harrison - most improved player at Glamorgan this season, notwithstanding Wharf's international selection.
28. M Davies - don't know anything about him but he must have done something right to take those wickets!
29. N Tahir - highly rated youngster, good stats this season.
30. G Batty - good attitude, provides another off spin option.

Generally, I agree with excluding players who've played over 5 test matches. This often shows they've had their chance to prove themselves at the top level and the selectors already know all they need to know about these players. However, with Read and Foster in particular, I think an exception should be made. Foster only played about 5 tests 3 years ago as a 21 year-old who had only played a couple of games of 1st class cricket. He's still very young in test cricketing terms and has vastly improved since those test matches (don't forget though, he averaged 25 with the bat when he played). If anyone needs a chance to stake a claim for the test side with some international A-Team action, then Foster deserves a chance; especially with the batting form he's shown this season. I don't think those with over 5 caps should be excluded if they are young enough to possibly warrant future call-ups to the full England squad. I think since Foster last played, he's changed enough that the selectors might want to take another look at him. Whilst this is not the case for Read, he should still be allowed to be selected, say, in a years time when he will have developed more and the selectors would need to see how he would now compete in the international arena.

I understand how you feel, Andy, but this team was never about putting the best possible second string side together otherwise I would have included players over 30 with more than 5 Test matches. It's about raising the profile of up-and-coming players who we think have potential to make it to Test level one day and deserve a call-up. Read and Foster are well in the selectors sights and don't need any further encouragement from us. However, players like Matt Prior do.
