WAT Future England Test Cricketer award 2004

One final task we need to do now that the A-Team is sorted is to vote for a special WAT award. I'm doing some PR for this site and will be running a story about our site and the A-Team tournament in magazines, websites and maybe radio. The award would be a good talking point. Since the tournament is about showcasing the talents of aspiring Test players I think it would be appropriate that we give an annual award to someone we feel should be given a Test try-out someday. We could call the award the World A-Team Future Test Cricketer 2004 - England.

Candidates are drawn from the recently selected WAT England A team who haven't already had Test experience. That excludes Collingwood, Smith and Bell.

The eight candidates are:

Code:
1. Jefferson (Div 2) RHB
2. Hutton (Div 1) LHB
3. Pieterson (Div 2) RHB, Right Arm Off Break6.
4. Wallace (wkt) (Div 2) LHB
5. Mascarenhas (Div 2) RHB, Right Arm Fast Medium
6. Harrison (Div 2) RHB, Right Arm Fast Medium
7. Lewis (Div 1) RHB, Right Arm Medium
8. Keedy (Div 1) LHB, Slow Left Arm Orthodox
The poll question is: Who would you most like to see get a Test call-up? This is not the same as "Who do you think is most likely to get a Test call-up?"

Voted for keedy purley to encourage depth in quality spin bowling.

I think Keedy could succeed at test level.

Arrggghh! This is a tough poll. I'd love to see Jefferson play for England - not just in an entirely Essex-centric-jingoistic way; but I'd also like to see David Harrison play for England. I'm not going to vote for Pietersen, as he will play for England and pretty soon as well, so if he won the poll, it would probably be obsolete come the Zimbabwe tour (although ODIs only, I think some of the impact would be lost). I'll have to give this some thought - though I'd vote for Jefferson and Harrison given the chance.

With Wallace, I think there's too many alternatives for him to get a chance in GO Jones, Read, Foster and Prior. Anyway, I'll give it some thought.

I had to go for Lewis, really: with England seemingly following the rest of the world in search of outright pace in the bowling.. I'd love to see someone with more traditional virtues fight their way in. Should surely get a chance in the ODI before long.. so there's a chance.

Thanks, Rachael. I'm just waiting on two or three more votes: Andy, GW and Notts and I'll declare the winner. I will declare the winner based on votes in the poll, however, if anyone thinks the margin is not conclusive then let me know and I'll ask the voters to give a "1 2 3 4" vote so we can find a winner with Most Points received.

Not voting for KP for similar reasons to Andy, he WILL play for England, it's just a matter of time. If David Harrison is very good then I would lkke to see him get the opportunity.

I don't see Keedy ever getting the chance, why would we pick two slow left armers ? and I don't believe that Mascarenhas would be up to it at Test level. Playing on the Rose Bowl pitches every week is very easy for a helf decent bowler.

I don't agree that Pietersen should be discounted on the basis that he is expected to get a call-up. After-all, the selectors may only consider him as a one-day specialist like Blackwell and may never give him a try-out in Test matches. The question is: Who would you most like to see get a Test call-up? If you think someone deserves a Test call-up and you genuinely think they can succeed at Test level, given a chance to adapt, then you should vote for that player.
