WAT Australia A 2005/06

Now that the year is drawing to a close it's time for our WAT Australian selectors to finalize an A team. Please select the most deserving players who have performed well in 2005 and who fit the WAT criteria.

Criteria:
1. Players must be under 30 years of age when the team is selected.
2. They must not have played more than 5 Test matches.
3. The players must have potential to play Test cricket. Some players are only suited to one-day cricket. If you feel a player can develop into a Test cricketer then select him as a candidate.
4. To avoid anomolies the player should have competed in at least 8 first-class matches in the calendar year ( the selectors may adjust this figure in exceptional or unusual circumstances ) The point of this rule is that a player has to be judged on performances in the 2005 season to warrant selection in the WAT team.

If you wish to be a WAT selector please start by nominating your list of contenders. The number in the list can be variable but the final Australia A team should be as balanced as possible. For example, all the bowlers shouldn't be spinners nor should the team contain more than one wicketkeeper.

Once all the selectors have nominated their contenders it's up to them to discuss the best candidates and formulate a final XI.

Paoli's WAT Australia XI

1. Phil Jaques- Played the one test, only a matter of time before he plays some more.
2. Callum Ferguson- Class act.
3. Mark Cosgrove- Darren Lehmann-esque, extraordinary talent.
4. David Hussey- Needs to get a few things right but can be a very good international cricketer.
5. Shane Watson- Very good batsman, rising bowler.
6. Cameron White- Backed him for the top six spot this year, can bowl in tandem with Cullen.
7. Brad Haddin- Head and shoulders second best WKB in Australia, if not the world.
8. Mitchell Johnson- Left Arm Fast, very good prospect.
9. Dan Cullen- Good Off spinner
10. Shaun Tait- A Moral really
11. Brett Dorey/Allan Wise- Had never heard of the former before his shock Aussie call up, but have big raps on the latter.

All-right lets start getting some ideas together.

Here are the players we all seem to agree on (or three of those who have posted agree with incl. myself).

1.Phil Jaques
2.Callum Ferguson
3.Mark Cosgrove
4.Shane Watson
5. Domonic Thornely
6.David Hussey
7.Cameron White
8. Brad Haddin
9. Dan Cullen
10.Johnson
11.Shaun Tait

Watson does'nt really qualify.

That means we have to pick another bowler and two batsmen (preferably).

I'm going to start a Poll to decide who should be the teams Keeper. It will close in 48 hours.

Why doesn't Watson qualify? Played three tests and mid 20's isn't he?

As for the keeper, I've gone for Brad Haddin.

5 tests is the cut-off but Watson would already be there if it wer'nt for his injury... Let's go for somebody a little further away from the team.

No, Watson in for mine. He won't be straight back into the side because of Symonds, so I'll stick to my guns and say Watto. And not Dominic Thornely if it is someone outside of Watto, he is every bit as frustrating as Ian Harvey.
