WAT South Africa A Team 2006

As the 2005/6 South African domestic season is drawing to a close, I thought it was time for us to consider the selection of the WAT South Africa A Team.

i think my A team would be:

A Petersen
Amla
Duminy
V Van Jaarsveld
A Jacobs
D Jacobs

A Morkel
Philander

Kuhn
Van Wyk

Kleinveldt
Steyn
Govender
MBhalati

Tshabalala

it's hard though we have a lot of solid players in the domestic game but i reckon these guys are the ones!!

I haven't had time to go through and select my whole team yet, but there are some players who are must haves:

Hachim Amla - Sure he's been unsuccessful so far in tests, but he's got the technique. A bit of A Team cricket should give him some decent experience.
Albie Morkel - Well, he's only played 4 domestic games apparently, but he's gotta be in the team to fill the vital all-rounder spot.
Dale Steyn - He's only 23, played some tests and looked dangerous and his performance in the domestic season was superb

Apart from that, van Wyk must be in there as the keeper. I think he's only 24 and the weight of runs he's scored this season and the fact he can keep should help him secure that spot.

Of the others, I remain to be convinced - but the two Jacobses look as if they should make the team based on sheer weight of runs.

arno jacobs definetly for the fact he has scored runs in the worst team in the league by a long way at an average in the mid 40s.

as for some of my other choices

Duminy - Scores heavy runs and every year and at the age of just 21/22 he has already aserted himself as one of the top 5 batsman domestically with consistently good performances, in my opinion a better player than amla.

Kuhn - Looks a massive talent, a keeper batsman who opens the batting and has the same sort of talent as AB De Villiers while being a better a keeper, i would have him over van wyk because van wyk is 27 compared to Kuhn who is 20/21.

Tshabalala - The biggest spinning prospect tio come out of south africa in years, his average looks pretty poor but it is not bad for someone who is just 20 years of age so he would certainly be on my A team list to gain valuablke experience.

Govender - A 22 year old seam bowler who has lead the attack for the succesful dolphins very well in recent years but he is not near the finished article yet and requires further coaching to get him up to his full potential, the A team would certainly help him.

Vaughn Van Jaarsveld Ayoung kid who is showing flashes of magic but also has been inconsistent, some of his knocks though have reallly taken bowling attack to pieces so his average of 37 is not to bad for someone of just 21 but good old vaughnie in a few year could bring much needed class to the batting, i think it would be nice to give him a taste and see how he goes.

as for Mbhalati well he has the ability to be a right handful at time

just to clarify this would be my first choice XI:

Kuhn
A Petersen (there is a real lack of openers)
Amla
Duminy
A Jacobs
D Jacobs
Morkel
Klienveldt
Mbhalati
Steyn
Tshbalala

Hi Rachael, if you submit a team you're more than welcome to debate that point during the selection process. On the otherhand, if you don't, you'll be on the sidelines whilst a keeper-batsman maybe voted in.

I'm afraid I am guilty on this point of looking at a player's stats rather than having seen him play. Amla, Morkel, Steyn and Duminy I've seen play at various points - but with van Wyk, I've just gone by his stats which show he's scored a weighty amount of runs this season. Also, I thought he was 24 rather than the 27 which Maty has stated. By all accounts, it sounds like Kuhn might be a better option as keeper - if that's his natural position. However, I'd be loathed to have him open and keep - we all saw how Alec Stewart's batting suffered whilst opening and keeping.

From what Maty has said about Vaughan van Jaarsveld and Tshabalala, these sound like the perfect guys to be in the A Team. They may not be the best or most consistent at their particular craft, but they are the sort of players that the South African full team needs at the moment - a classy middle order player to support Kallis, and a spinner. The experience of A team cricket would surely give them an early boost in their careers.
