Should Adil Rashid be considered the frontrunner on the specialist spinner front? He's only 18 years old and has just the five first class games to his name... but rather like Panesar last year, he's made the best of limited opportunities. My concern is that he's very expensive... not giving the captain the control that's required at Test level. it's all very well saying he's you and that the control will come... but the same was said of Salisbury, and that precedent is NOT encouraging.

Doshi's season is a tough one to judge given that it's in division two... but on a very batsman friendly home pitch he did become one of the leading wicket takers of the season. To my mind his control was still nothing to write home about... but it might just be our least-worst option.

Edit: If none of the specialists inspire then Batty might still have to be considered. He's bowled more overs than Doshi this season and taken 43 wickets at a decent average.... but unlike all of the others he's offered control: an economy rate of 2.9 compares unfavourably with Panesar's 2.64 but it is at least credible.

Name Mat O M R W Ave Best 5 10 SR Econ Team
A Rashid 5 180.2 21 629 25 25.16 6-67 1 - 43.2 3.48 YORKS
MAK Lawson 7 207 3 897 26 34.50 6-88 2 - 47.7 4.33 YORKS
ND Doshi 13 449.5 82 1415 50 28.30 6-91 1 1 53.9 3.14 SURREY

For what it's worth, the batting of the three is as follows:
Code:
Name Mat I NO Runs HS Ave SR 100 50 Ct St Team
A Rashid 5 6 0 115 63 19.16 48.72 - 1 2 - YORKS
MAK Lawson 7 10 2 124 44 15.50 59.61 - - 5 - YORKS
ND Doshi 13 12 7 94 32 18.80 41.77 - - 3 - SURREY
GJ Batty 15 24 8 744 112* 46.50 57.09 1 3 14 - WORCS
Edit: I've ammended the poll to reflect a vote from me for Batty to reach the shortlist. Should anyone else want to ammend their vote please let me know.

Of course Rashid will be expensive he is a young legspinner. The stat to look at though is his strike rate which is exceptional.Whether he gets into the side this year or not he has to be considered and he can also bat as well which is a bonus.

Rashid's batting stats do not reflect just how good he is; he's made centuries in U19 matches and being in a poor Yorkshire batting side (bar Lehmann after the half way point in the season) which collapses quite a lot he's done reasonably okay.

As for his bowling; he is still quite raw (obviously) given his age so will offer the odd poor ball. However, an economy of 3.48 is still pretty good considering his position - we are hardly searching for the next Warne are we?
