I guess Onions has somehow been squeezed out along the way, congratulations.

I am very keen to see Rashid voted in, and Mahmood voted out. We are using exceptional circumstances for one but not the other, but the chair wants to balance the situation. I am behind Rachael on this.

It's a shame, however, that Jones-bashing can't escape this thread. Watching him play on the Trent Bridge highlights from last year have reminded me why I am behind him, currently as number two as he needs form, but in there nonetheless.

Well... Broad and Tremlett have not convinced everyone... but have clearly done enough: the majority of us have them in our top 2 picks and the majority of the rest have them as 3rd pick.

It seems that four of us object to Mahmood and four of us object to Smith... but even as a Smith advocate I think I'm going to have to concede this one: Flanflinger and Ernest want both Mahmood AND Smith and both consider Mahmood more important... and five contributers put Mahmood in their top 2 where only two of us did the same for Smith. Moreover, VRock (late in submitting but involved in the process right from making shortlist nominations) backs Mahmood over Smith.

Adamberry: Broad, Tremlett, Mahmood, Smith
Andy Mellon: Broad, Tremlett, Smith, Mahmood
Collyisamackem: Broad, Tremlett, Smith, Mahmood
Darksideofthemoon: Tremlett, Mahmood, Broad, Smith
Ernest: Mahmood, Tremlett, Smith, Broad
Flanflinger: Broad, Mahmood, Smith, Tremlett
Greg: Mahmood,Broad,Tremlett, Smith
Mike: Tremlett, Mahmood, Broad, Smith
Rachael: Smith, Tremlett, Broad, Mahmood
Statto: Broad, Smith, Tremlett, Mahmood
Vrock: Broad, Tremlett, Mahmood, Smith
The more contentious issue remains the batting:
Code:
Adamberry: Sales, Shah, Clarke
Andy Mellon: Shah, Sales, Clarke
Collyisamackem: Shah, Clarke, Sales
Darksideofthemoon: Shah, Clarke, Sales
Ernest: Sales, Clarke, Shah
Flanflinger: Shah, Clarke, Sales
Greg: Clarke, Sales, Shah
Mike: Clarke, Sales, Shah
Rachael: Sales, Shah, Clarke
Statto: Sales, Clarke, Shah
Vrock: Shah, Sales, Clarke
Like Mahmood, Shah REALLY divides opinion: he's both (taking VRock's vote along with the others) equal most popular AND equal least popular. Clarke is the complete opposite: hardly anyone has him as first choice... but he is a popular second choice as well as being (with VRock's vote) equal least favourite.

No matter which way this is dissected, it seems to me that Sales just manages a uncomfortably tight poll victory: he tops the poll with or without VRock's vote (first choice of almost half the original contributers) and does better than Shah for second place votes.

With all that said... Shah dominates the poll at the head of this thread with 13/16 votes (note:the poll reveals XI clear winners constituting a fully balanced side: an astonishingly clearcut preference for Shah over Sales or Clarke!).

I can't see how Sales could be considered a better prospect than Shah, given the latter's long term county record and performance in his sole test, but I have a potential solution. If we're not considering Compton and Newman as shoe-ins, why not push Joyce up to open and have both Shah and Sales in the middle order? If we were to drop one opener I'd be tempted to keep Newman in, having liked what I've seen on TV in the last two seasons.

Colly, Shah is a good prospect but I've said many times that being selected in the WAT A team is about giving deserving players an opportunity to showcase their talents at a higher level. This year, Shah was well below his best and, consequently, Middlesex finished last in Div 1. His team-mate Compton had an outstanding year and we need a decent opener to partner Newman. I realize Shah had a good debut Test match but he's not making enough hundreds to warrant inclusion. Sales and Clarke have been knocking on the door for a couple of years now and I think they deserve a chance to showcase their talents at A level. Shah still has a couple of years of qualification left so let's see if he can force his way back into the side next year.

I'm inclined to agree: I don't see much difference between them and could easily have voted the other way. That said, neither really inspire in the way that Joyce does (and as Bell did before him)... they just ain't quite as unpromising as the rest.

Anyway, we appear to be presented with a provisional XI as follows:
Code:
Compton
Newman
Yardy
Joyce
Sales
Dalrymple
Foster
Rashid
Broad
Tremlett
Mahmood
Of that lot I've got to admit that few really inspire: Joyce stands out... and Adil Rashid looks VERY promising... but I'm not sure the side is otherwise any stronger (or more deserving) than the following:
Code:
Adams
Chopra
Ed Smith
Shah
Solanki
Gidman
Davies
Mascarenhas
Tom Smith
Onions
Doshi
In truth.... given that it includes my two first choice seamers I'd be tempted to vote the latter side as more appealing :-)

Side A.

Rachael you can't play Dalrymple - Yardy - Rashid in the same side, it really is not on 3 spinners - even if Rashid is eligible, he has only played three games of any consequence.

Side B

This side has no bowlers with bite as such, an A Team without an England choice Mahmood is unthinkable, I applaud you inclusion of Ed Smith.

So I would suggest you forget Rashid for this year and go with side A, and shuffle the order to include Ed Smith in his place, I suppose that would have to mean Dalrymple, but if that's the price to pay......

Why is there the need to play Yardy as an all-rounder? Leave him as a specialist bat and let Dalrymple and Rashid do the bowling. Yardy can bowl as a part-timer (which I was under the impression he was in "proper" cricket) as and when he's needed.

My personal opinion is that of the two XI's given, the first one looks the better.

Yardy is in as a batsman. He makes a better case as batsman than any of Sales, Shah and Clarke. The fact that Yardy is a handy net bowler (rather as Clarke is a handy net seamer) is a complete irrelevence.

To my mind Dalrymple also gets in as a batsman. He has a first class 244 vs. Surrey to his name and batting in division 1 this season he outperformed Rob Key and his average was within 4 runs of his experienced Middlesex team-mates Ed Smith and Owais Shah.

I'm also inclined to note the fact that England's selectors picked him for the ODI series... and his stunning composure in facing a full-strength Pakistan headed by Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Asid and Naved-ul-Hasan as well as the best of Murali.

Now... Dalrymple can ALSO bowl. That does not make him a genuine bowler, and he's certainly not yet a rival for Doshi with the ball, but having bowled an average of 31 overs / match at a passable 3.05 he's certainly shown more than enough potential to be regarded as a credible second spinner.

Rashid is something completely different. His batting got him into the Yorks side.... but he's an agressive legspinner with the 5th highest strike rate (43.28) of all regular domestic bowlers: the guy even picked up an 8 wicket haul in an U-19 Test against India (a side that ought to know a thing or two about playing spin). He's a partnership breaker on a par with Mahmood or Simon Jones - as different from Dalrymple as you could get!

As a five man attack the provisional XI is as balanced as it is possible to get: ideal, really.

If we approve Team A as our final XI then the previous post shows how many players our selectors matched with the final XI. Vrock matched 10/11 and at the other end of the scale flanflinger matched 6/11.

It's interesting to see which players are involved with squads playing cricket overseas. Four players are involved in the Champions Trophy, one player in the Ashes and five players involved with the Academy squad. That's 6 of 11 selected in squads. The remaining players who will be spectators in the coming months are Compton, Newman, Sales, Foster and Rashid. From that group, one wonders how much longer we can pick Foster in the WAT side ahead of Davies or Prior as both are in the Academy and will get opportunites to play A matches? Furthermore, how much longer can we bypass Rikki Clarke from the WAT side when he keeps getting opportunities in ODIs and the Academy squad as well? Surely, it can only be a matter of time. As for those five players I mentioned they are going to have to use the County Championship next year to impress the WAT selectors.

As far as Rachael's final XI is concerned, I think it's reasonably good and I don't think tweaking it is going to significantly improve it. Dalrymple and Yardy are not match-winning spinners so I don't mind them in the side as back-up spinners to Rashid. I think Rashid is way out of his depth at the moment and didn't even make the Academy squad so I doubt he would be effective in a real A match situation. That's why I think this side is flawed. When I act as Chairman of Selectors I try and get as close to a real competitive side as possible.

The second side that Rachael posted has got some quality as well but they need to put in a solid year in the County Championship next season to force their way into the WAT side. Apart from them, there are some other talented yougsters who could also make a name for themselves next year so the selection process should be equally as interesting as this year's has been.
