I think at 23 or 24, my main question is are we looking for a batsman or a bowler? Thornely is a far better batsman so if we are looking for a batsman we should go with Thornely and if we are after another bowler we should go with McDonald or Magoffin. I just think that Watson has taken his McDonald position in the side.

Chris Rogers: open - Ave 50.20 first class cricket.
Phil Jaques: open - Ave 56.00 first class cricket
Dominic Thornely - Ave 42.65 first class cricket
Marcus North - Ave 43.62 first class cricket
Shane Watson - speaks for himself
Adam Voges - 42.04 first class cricket
Mitchell Johnson - a wicket every 8 and a bit overs
Bailey - leggie
Shaun Tait - speaks for himself
Ben Hilfenhaus - 99 first class wickets in 21 matches.
?????????????????????????

It goes without saying Tait and Hilfenhaus along with Watson walk in the side.

Phil Jaques is as good an opening bat prospect as you can get, won't be long before he is in the Aussie national team.
Baily gets it over Heal on account that he is a leggie, and should be given a chance to come good, no contest in the long run IMO.

Bailey is Andrew Jenners (the spin doctors) prosept for great things, but everyone else has spoken with Heal making it into the side. Im a little biast because I don't rate offspinners except for Muralitharan who really is not an offspinner more like an allround spinner. Its funny because people are saying he has not done well enough in the Pura Cup but the great S.K Warne's record is well below par in Pura Cup. So you never know with legspinners and Bailey is rated highely by Jenner and is his work in progress.

Warne - 46 mat, 161 wickets at 34.72, bb 7-100, 8x5wi, 1x10wm, sr 73.6, econ 2.82 - VIC

At the moment I think that Rogers is ahead of Jaques because Rogers is a better replacement for Langer where Jaques is a brute like Hayden. No doubt Jaques and Rogers will be a powerful opening partership within 2 to 3 years.
Watson wants Langers position but I don't think he is good enough to open in Test cricket.

Agreed - off spin bowlers were worked out years ago IMO, Murali is not an orthadox off spinner, he turn it any way he wants.

The last great England off spinner was Laker, there have until the 90's been good offie's, but not great.

Heal may make it to the side - but unlike Bailey - he could never make another Warne.

I think McDonalds average suffered because he started playing first class cricket aged 21 compared to Thornley aged 24.

But I will go along with Thornly's selection, being a player who deserves to be nominated allthough I personally hold McDonald slightly higher.

It also the position where Thornely is a top 4 batsman and McDonald is a middle to lower order batsman. Thats one of the reasons, if Watson was not in the side McDonald would have had that position but I think that Thornely balances the side more.

Chirs Rogers
Phil Jaques
Domanic Thornely
Marcus North
Adam Voges
Shane Watson
Luke Ronchi
Mitchell Johnson
Aaron Heal (I would have prefered Bailey but out voted)
Shaun Tait
Ben Hilfenhaus

12th Man - Andrew McDonald

Bowling Line Up
Shaun Tait
Ben Hilfenhaus
Mitchell Johnson
Shane Watson
Aaron Heal

Part timers
Marcus North
Adam Voges

Daniel Marsh - 33
Sean Clingeleffer - 27
Luke Butterworth - 23
Damien Wright - 31
Adam Griffith - 29
Ben Hilfenhaus - 24

12th Man - Brendan Drew - 23

Like Victoria Tassy have a lot of players near good enough but just short.
They obviously have a more even spread of players than some other states
Tassy Birt and Clingeleffer both just fell short, White and Jewell likewise for the Vic's.
