WAT New Zealand - 2006/7

It is approaching the end of the New Zealand 2006/7 season with the State Shield semi-final this week, the 20:20 having been finalised and the Championship soon to be rounded off.

Who are the early contenders for a place in the WAT side this year?

Last year's side was:

How, Papps, Taylor, Ryder, Bell, Fulton, Watling, Yovich, Patel, Aldridge, Sherlock

Remember, the selection criteria are:

(1) Player is under 30
(2) Player has played no more than 5 tests
(3) Player has played in more than 5 first-class games (for NZ purposes, due to low volume of games - 5 List A + First Class combined)

How, Fulton and Papps are no longer eligible as they have played 5 tests of recent vintage.
Yovich is no longer eligible as he's over 30.
Sherlock hasn't played this year so is ineligible.

So a few changes are required!

Taylor, Ryder and Bell are probably still must-haves in the middle order. The keeper position is up-for-grabs and we may well be looking at a brand new seam attack to support Jeetan Patel. As always with NZ, there's a dire need for a classy pair of openers.

With one game left to play in this year's state championship, its time to start selection. I have disregarded the final as it is unrepresentative of the matches throughout the rest of the season. Standout performances in the final should be considered, however.

Presented below are the stats for the batting and bowling, having removed most of the over 30s and those who have played too many test matches.

I have also left people like Geoff Barnett, Grant Elliott and Colin de Grandhomme in the mix, even though they are 'foreign', they are eligible for New Zealand (can anyone honestly say he'd turn down the chance to play for NZ?).

So, what are your initial thoughts?

Here's mine, for the record:

Opener, Bell, Broom, Taylor, Ryder, Hiini, Stu Mills, Elliott, Southee/Aldridge, Patel, Gillespie

Erm... Andy, Matthew Bell is over thirty and has played 13 Tests!

I've edited him out of the stats above.

When i made the first post in this thread, he was only 29!! He's only just turned 30 and all his tests were played over 5 years ago, hence he would have been eligible if he was below 30.

Oh well... Makes finding openers even more difficult this year.

Here's my twopenn'orth, for what it's worth:

Watling (+, 21yo), Ingram (28), Broom (23), Taylor (23, OB), Stewart (24), Redmond (27), Hiini (25), Scott (27, LFM), Gillespie (27, RFM), Aldridge (29, RFM), Patel (26, 1 Test, OB).

Whether Watling is the right person for the gloves I'm not sure, nor am I sure that he would bat quick enough; his strike rate this season (and overall) suggest he's a bit too much of a plodder.

From last year's side, How, Papps, Taylor, Ryder, Bell, Fulton, Watling, Yovich, Patel, Aldridge, Sherlock... How, Papps and Fulton have played too many tests and Bell and Yovich now exceed the 30 mark whilst Sherlock has been injured all season.

Lets have a look at the candidates for each position:

Opener: Ingram, Todd Astle, TG McIntosh, Geoff Barnett (Canada)
Keeper: Watling, Stu Mills, Bevan Griggs, Reece Young
Middle Order (lots of candidates here): Taylor, Ryder, Broom, Hiini, Shanan Stewart, Redmond, Elliott
Spinner: Jeetan Patel, Bruce Martin
Seamer: Aldridge, Gillespie, Scott, McMillan, Southee (a very good number 8, and a good prospect despite having the worst bowling analysis)

To my mind, the must haves are Taylor, Ryder, Patel and Gillespie. Hiini also deserves a spot as he's been very successful with the bat in his first full season. The reason Ryder is so important is he's one of the only Kiwi batsman who averages over 40 in first class cricket across his career who is eligible for the side, and he also takes a few wickets with his Craig McMillan style dobbers.

For the openers, Ingram and Barnett look decent candidates. McIntosh's average is artificially inflated by one innings and Astle has been very erratic.

For the bowlers, once again Aldridge is the stand out performer. Gillespier has been shown to be quite successful in internationals and then I'd give Southee a go. I've seen him a couple of times and I think he may have the goods. He'd be my bolter.

If we want a proper all-rounder, Grant Elliott is the way to go. Very good batting record and a more than useful medium-fast bowling option.

Completely agree with the must haves.

There are quite a lot of batsmen who've had their averages artificially inflated by the one high score; which really is the problem with having such a short season. That said, Ingram looks pretty good for selection having got four centuries against his name, although he seems to be vulnerable early in his innings (a lot of single figure scores I notice).

I believe Ingram had an awful start to the summer and came roaring back into form in the period after Xmas (the Championship plays half the matches around Nov/Dec and then the other have Feb/Mar with the state shield and 20:20 over the Xmas period.

I'll post the State Shield top run scorers and wicket takers to see if that helps out.

EDIT: I guess this throws up the potential of van Wyk as keeper (though having Barnett, Elliott and van Wyk would be pretty awful). Other than confirming that Aldridge is a useful number 9, I can't get much out of these stats.

Hey everyone,

Sorry I've been a little absent lately (in most senses of the word) but I was thinking about this the other day...

Opener:Just off the top of my head I think Ingram has played well this year so there's one opener. Papps had another monster season but as we've been through he's unfortunately ineligable. Is Barnett eligible given that he's currently playing ODI's for Canada?

Middle: Taylor is a given, as is Ryder - though he didn't have a brilliant season he's one the few Kiwis with a FC average over 40 so he's in.

Keeper: Has Hopkins over 30 or have people just forgotten about him? As much as I'm a fan of Griggs I think Hopkins hit about three tons in row, but Griggs had a good season too...

All Rounder: Hiini's a good pick, who's that other guy from Otago?

Spinner: Patel

Pace/Seamers: Gillespie shown himself able to foot it with the big boys, but has he played enough games this season to be eligible? Aldridge is another gimme but how about McMillan (J)?

My 'Rookie of the year' award goes to Greg Hay (CD) who, after being left stranded on 98* on FC debut managed to reach a maiden ton in about the second-to-last game of the year. He'd be my bolter if we had a gap in the middle order - though we don't...

If a player missed a few first-class games because of international duties with the A team or ODI team then that has to be taken into consideration regarding qualification. In past WAT teams, we've allowed players to qualify despite not playing enough first-class games in the season because they were touring with ODI or A teams. Commensense must prevail and good fringe players must be considered even though they may not have played the required number of first-class games. If they missed most of the first-class domestic season due to injury that's a different matter.
