Do we have any other nominations for openers other than Broad and Hughes

Bearing in mind that Broads batting average is clearly well below the other batsmen candidates we are looking at including the keepers.

They're the top two qualifying specialist openers aren't they? And I think most selectors indicated they wanted specialists in opening.

Hughes clearly is by virtue of an average above 60, Broad is not so clear cut averaging in the low 30's.

Anyway it looks like the vote is settled so we have

Hughes
Broad

as the opening pairing.

I will just paste up the Australian Test and ODI sides selected to tour the West Indies, which have a couple of the candidates we have spoken about (highlited)

Quote:
Australia will play three Tests, five one-day internationals and a Twenty-20 match on the eight-week tour.

Test squad:

Ricky Ponting (c), Michael Clarke (vc), Beau Casson, Stuart Clark, Brad Haddin, Matthew Hayden, Ben Hilfenhaus, Michael Hussey, Phil Jaques, Mitchell Johnson, Simon Katich, Brett Lee, Stuart MacGill, Ashley Noffke, Andrew Symonds.

One-day squad:

Ricky Ponting (c), Michael Clarke (vc), Nathan Bracken, Stuart Clark, Brad Haddin, Matthew Hayden, James Hopes, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Shaun Marsh, Andrew Symonds, Cameron White.

You could get your wish next time. According to the West Australian, Rogers is set to defect to Queensland and Marsh is the frontrunner to take his position as an opener.

Interesting that Hilfenhaus made it into the squad. Based on recent form, you'd think that Siddle, Magoffin and Bollinger (if fit) should be there ahead of him. Good that the selectors are backing him for the long haul, though.

Openers: Broad + Hughes
Middle Order: Marsh, Bailey, Pomersbach, Voges/Other
Keeper: Ronchi + Hartley
Spinners: Casson + White/AN Other
Seamers: Bollinger, Magoffin, Siddle, Harris/McDonald

So is this where we are now?

All decided other than Harris vs McDonald, White vs a proper spinner and Voges vs Some other Middle Order candidate??

I vote for McDonald ahead of Harris, White as the second spinner and Voges as the fourth batsman.

I agree too... So, does this mean we're going with the above squad?

That'd leave the First XI as:

Broad
Hughes
Marsh
Bailey
Pomersbach
Ronchi
McDonald/White
Casson
Magoffin
Siddle
Bollinger

Maybe Ronchi batting below McDonald/White.

I'm happy with that squad/team. Perhaps Ronchi one place down the order though if it matters.

Following is my provisional side
I have opted not to include Adam Voges as his batting was shaded by the others, including Andrew McDonald.
I also disagree with a few here that Chris Hartley is the second choice keeper behind Ronchi, I believe Manou and Wade are ahead of him.

Phil Hughes
Ryan Broad
Shaun Marsh
George Bailey
Luke Pomersbach
Cameron White
Luke Ronchi
Beau Casson
Peter Siddle
Steve Magoffin
Doug Bollinger

(12th Man Andrew McDonald)

I think the three pacemen are pretty clear cut.
Cricinfo - Records - Pura Cup, 2007/08 - Most wickets

And below is my reasoning for the batting.
Cricinfo - Records - Pura Cup, 2007/08 - Most runs

PHP Code:
.........................M......I.....NO....Run.......H.S...........Avge
Cam White
................9.....17.....2.....748.......149*.........49.86
Adam Voges
..............9.....16.....1.....562.......180...........37.46
George Bailey
...........10.....19.....2.....734.......104...........43.17
Andrew McDonald
.........10.....16.....5.....545.......139...........49.54
Thoughts please.
