Mark Davies hailed as bright prospect for the international scene

Each year the BBC pick "Six to watch" and they have again had a go at predicting "players on the cusp of making an impact on the international cricket scene".

OF the three "up-and-coming players on the county scene attempting to break into the national senior side"... Mark Davies looks the most interesting.

Quote:
Mark Davies - age 28, born Stockton-on-Tees, right-arm seam bowler

The conveyor belt of fast bowlers from the north-east appeared to have left Davies behind when others like Steve Harmison, Liam Plunkett and Graham Onions gained England recognition, while he did not.

Davies's handicap was his fitness. He took 97 wickets between 2004 and 2005, and yet was injured for periods of both of those summers before spending three months in a body brace in 2006.

He began to recover in 2007 and took 39 wickets in 11 matches in the Championship-winning squad last summer. That haul included a stunning spell on a flat deck at Old Trafford, when he had Andrew Flintoff caught at slip first ball after seeing off Mark Chilton, Mohammad Yousuf and Mal Loye.

Davies's career bowling average of 21.17 is very good indeed and he could be approaching his best years now.

Needs to stay fit to have a chance of being picked but he is certainly worth looking at if he does.

So far thats his biggest problem.

I also think you have to think about the makeup of your bowling attack .You wouldnt want to pick him if you are playing (inferior) trundlers like Broad and Sidebottom.

He has generally bowled better for Durham when they have played a couple of genuine quick bowlers in the team and he has said himself that he enjoys it when he bowls with Harmison, Plunkett and Onions. Mmmm, is there a better pace quartet in domestic cricket then that.......

Notts would have a case with Broad,Sidebottom,Shreck and Pattinson i guess.Wouldn't like to choose between the two attacks.

Also a Lancs one of Chapple,Anderson,Flintoff and Mahmood isn't bad either.

I would, I've seen Sidebottom, Broad and Pattinson play for England. Not bad at county level though.

Thats not a bad attack and probably the only one that comes anywhere near to matching Durham for out and out pace.

I have to agree with most people here so far. Davies would be a good player if he was in the Sidebottom/Hoggard/Broad role.

Balance is essential, you need different players in your attack, so as good as they are a "pace" attack of Sidebottom, Broad and Davies would be eaten alive, but balance him with a Harmison and a Flintoff and suddenly you can accommodate Davies.
