Emerging Players Tournament

Australia host a quadrangular tournament for emerging players that starts this week.

Participating teams are Australia, New Zealand, India and South Africa. I'm sure the Aus, NZ and India teams will be made up of the players that are currently playing in the Top End Series.

Pakistan A goes over to England I believe, so SA fills the 4th spot.

Here's the SA "A" team: Neil McKenzie (capt, Highveld Lions), Loots Bosman (Eagles), Alviro Petersen (Highveld Lions), JP Duminy (Cape Cobras), Albie Morkel (Titans), Justin Ontong (Highveld Lions), Robin Peterson (Warriors), Thami Tsolekile (Cape Cobras), Garnett Kruger (Highveld Lions), Monde Zondeki (Cape Cobras), Thandi Tshabalala (Eagles), Davey Jacobs (Eagles), Alfonso Thomas (Titans), Johan van der Wath (Eagles), Morne van Wyk (Eagles).

Not sure what the complete schedule looks like, but the South Africans will play three 20/20 games, and 6 50 over games between the 10 and 21st of July.

So, unlike the Top End series, these are only limited overs games.

Round 2 -

This year's SA squad has a "newer" look to it though...more young guns. Players like Neil McKenzie, Justin Ontong, Johan van der Wath and Garnett Kruger miss out this time.

Johan Botha (Capt) - Warriors
Thami Tsolekile (Vice-Capt) - Cape Cobras
Yusuf Abdullah - Dolphins
Gulam Bodi - Titans
Friedel de Wet - Lions
JP Duminy Nashua - Cape Cobras
Faf du Plessis - Titans
Heino Kuhn - Titans
Morne Morkel - Titans
Alviro Petersen - Lions
Vernon Philander - Cape Cobras
Thandi Tshabalala - Diamond Eagles
Vaughn van Jaarsveld - Highveld Lions
Monde Zondeki - Cape Cobras

The other teams in the competition are the same as last year, with Australia, New Zealand and India the others participating.

Last year South Africa won this competition in a dramatic final against the Aussies.

Australia have finally named their squad (which they call an "institute of sport" squad rather than an emerging players or "A" squad)

Mark Cosgrove (SA)
Michael Hill (VIC)
Phillip Hughes (NSW)
Craig Philipson (QLD)
Matthew Wade (TAS)
Ben Cutting (QLD)
Brendan Drew (TAS)
Aaron Finch (VIC)
Shawn Gillies (WA)
Aaron Heal (WA)
Luke Pomersbach (WA)
Luke Ronchi (WA)
Grant Sullivan (QLD)
David Warner (NSW)
Ed Cowan (NSW)
Moises Henriques (NSW)
Cullen Bailey (SA)

So, this then the future of SA, New Zealand and Australian cricket....for now.

BTW. I see Michael Papps had to withdraw from the series after contracting "reactive arthritis following a bout of food poisoning"... Bad news for the New Zealand "A" squad. They have not named a replacement.
