England A-team - How did we do?

Last years team was;

Scott Newman - Surrey
Alastair Cook - Essex
Ed Joyce - Middlesex
Owais Shah - Middlesex
Paul Collingwood - Durham
James Foster - Essex
Dimitri Mascarenhas - Hampshire
Chris Tremlett - Hampshire
Mark Davies - Durham
Monty Panesar - Northamptonshire
Ryan Sidebottom - Nottinghamshire

We did ok didn't we? Cook, Collingwood and Panesar are now first choices in the England side while Shar and Tremlett have played test cricket too.

I think we did very well actually. Joyce, Shah, Tremlett, Collingwood, Panesar and Cook have all been in or around either the test or ODI squad - or occassionally both. Half of these players will not be eligible for the WAT A team this time around.

Of those who haven't played, Mascarenhas and Davies have both been injured - especially Davies. Foster's had a pretty good domestic season and gets occasional mentions in dispatches for the keeping slot. Sidebottom and Newman.... Haven't heard anything about them tbh!

I agree with both of you that we have done very well. The other thing to note is that many of the more obvious candidates for an England's Test/ODI squads actually did not meet the WAT A team criteria (either too old or too experienced). Otherwise, I am sure we would have selected the likes of Read and strongly considered Lewis.

It would also be interesting to look at the WAT England A team for 2004, selected back in Oct-2004:
Code:
1. Jefferson (Div 2) RHB
2. Hutton (Div 1) LHB
3. Smith (Div 1) RHB
4. Pietersen (Div 2) RHB, Right Arm Off Break
5. Bell (Div 1) RHB, Right Arm Medium
6. Collingwood (Div 2) RHB, Right Arm Medium
7. Wallace (wkt) (Div 2) LHB
8. Mascarenhas (Div 2) RHB, Right Arm Fast Medium
9. Harrison (Div 2) RHB, Right Arm Fast Medium
10. Lewis (Div 1) RHB, Right Arm Medium
11. Keedy (Div 1) LHB, Slow Left Arm Orthodox
We were correct with Pietersen, Bell, Collingwood and Lewis. And some of the others (eg Keedy) have not had full seasons since due to injury.

Newman's having an OK season scoring well. Sidebottom's not having a lot of luck and is suffering more than most at the Notts batting lineup's inability to post big totals. He's the man they drop the catches off!

It'll be tough this year seeing as England went through a spell of picking pretty much everyone!

Wicketkeeper should be a no brainer this year.
