"Under-19 players to watch" - one season on...

on February 21, 2006, following the Under-19 World Cup, Andrew McGlashan produced a Cricinfo XI article on "Under-19 players to watch". I was wondering what, if anything, each had been up to since that event. The youngsters were:

Moeen Ali

Anwar Ali

Kanishka Chaugai

Gaurav Dhiman

Moises Henriques

Jamshed Ahmed

Leon Johnson

Eoin Morgan

Mushfiqur Rahim

Piyush Chawla

Cheteshwar Pujara

Any news or informed views would be appreciated....

Chawla played the Mohali Test against England, with mixed results. He was probably rushed to the side.

Anwar Ali Khan is yet to play a first-class game, or even sign up for a team.

Jamshed Ahmed has played some first-class cricket and would probably be called up for A-tours and national camps in the near future.

Moeen Ali - England Has played quite a lot of cricket since the U19 World Cup. Mainly 2nd XI stuff and more U19 matches. He's also played some List A matches and six FC matches. In his last FC match against Kent he scored 7 runs batting at #3. Not sure if he'll be another Dalrymple or a batsman who can bowl part-time off-spin.

Anwar Ali

Kanishka Chaugai

Gaurav Dhiman - India Is a quick scoring opening batsman who can also bowl some occasional medium pace. As yet, he hasn't played first-class cricket but has played a couple of List A matches in the Ranji Trophy. He disappointed in those matches getting out both times without scoring and facing a total of three balls. He was bowled by guys that bowled fast-medium and had 25+ FC matches to their credit. In July, he participated in the Cricket Australia Emerging Players Tournament and made a couple of half-centuries in seven matches for Karnataka XI.

Moises Henriques - Australia Since the U19 World Cup he has only played five LO matches. He seems to be a genuine all-rounder that bowls medium-fast. With the Australian cricket season about to get under way it will be interesting to see if he plays in the Pura Cup.

Jamshed Ahmed

Leon Johnson

Eoin Morgan

Mushfiqur Rahim

Piyush Chawla

Cheteshwar Pujara - India Has only played four matches since the U19 World Cup. He has played 4 FC matches including a FC century. In July, he opened for India A in the Top End series against New Zealand A in a FC match but made only 8 runs in his two innings. He was then overlooked for the FC match against Australia A.

I really want information on what has happened since... but for Moises Henriques' background at the U-19 World Cup see http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/ci/co...ry/237296.html

He is rarely out of the action and his destructive performance against Sri Lanka in the quarter-finals showed the influence of an allrounder when both halves of the game click at the same time.

The eye-catching aspect of Henriques is how technically correct he is with bat and ball. He has a high, flowing and easily repeatable action, generates plenty of pace through the crease and bowls an accurate bouncer. With bat in hand it took him a few innings to really hit his straps, but then he put on an awesome display of clean, straight hitting against Sri Lanka. He began as a fast bowler who could bat, but can now hold a place in the top four of the U-19 side. Trevor Bayliss, his coach at New South Wales, has compared him to Mark Waugh and there is certainly some resemblance in the graceful way he plays on both sides of the pitch.

All the info in my previous post relates to what those players have done since the U19 World Cup. I'll keep editing my post as I gather the info.

Pretty much what Rach has down is what Hanriques has done to date... The guy is an awsome talent and I would imagine will get more time in the NSW team this year.

Last season he played a few games (as the youngest NSW's man to play ODD), not really doing much partly due to the fact he was only given a few chances but also due to the rise in competition. He took a few wickets and made a few runs (esp in one game where he and another guy played out the game in very tough circumstances).

Last season Ponting wanted to meet with Mosies to "discuss what the future holds"...

I saw Chawla bowl in an U19 game on Sky, and he is the real deal - fantastic looking bowler. In fact, on the Middx supporters forum website, I'm urging them to sign him as an overseas player.
