Control is what distinguishes those with the maturity to step up a level from mere "prospects": it is what gives the captain the confidence to use the player. It's also (notoriously) the toughest part of leg-spin bowling... and what sets Warne apart from every other leg-spinner in history. It's what has been missing from all other England leg-spin prospects for a generation!

Indeed it is, but courage "under fire" is also very important. Salisbury had good control but as soon as he got some stick his line and length went. Good batsman new this and went after him straight away - the result, his head went down and he was innefective for the innings.

An interesting article in the Independent implies that Rashid will be kept under wraps at Yorkshire for some time, a good thing given that he is only 19 and has already suffered a stress fracture. However, if he carries on taking hatfuls of wickets this year and next (as well as contributing with the bat) there will be a loud clamour for his selection when the Aussies arrive in 2009. Which brings up the question of whether he will end up bowling in tandem with Panesar (a la Emburey/Edmunds) in a 3 seam 2 spin attack, or taking his place. He certainly appears to have the potential with the bat to be considered a long term replacement for Flintoff in the allrounder category, and with the likes of Stuart Broad, NIck Compton and Steve Davies also waiting in the wings the future looks bright in all departments.
