Interview with Peter Ingram

Another day, another World-A-Team interview; this time with Peter Ingram, selected as an opener for the World-A-Team New Zealand A team.

Peter hails from the Taranaki region in the North Island of New Zealand and keeps himself occupied in the off-season by working as a teacher. He suffered from poor batting form in the last couple of years, but re-established himself with his Central Districts team this year, scoring no less than four State Championship centuries!

Good interview. Thanks Andy.

Really a pity he is not in the NZ "A" side for the quadrangular. It seems though that the side is not finalised yet, so he may still make it...?

Interesting point he makes about that under 19 tour. I have often wondered how much such young ones REALLY get out of tours like that. I mean being so young and all. Does it really benefit the players, or are some of them just too awe-struck too really work on their game.

He seems like a very self-effacing kind of guy. He doesn't want to overstate his achievements in the last season as his position in the team has been pretty precarious. I guess he just doesn't want to lose that certain 'something' that gave him that form.

I guess he could still get called up for the Emerging Players Tournament, but he'd be relying on injuries to other players to get him ahead in that queue.

Seems a common trait among New Zealanders. Always kind of admired the Kiwis for that, and something maybe we Aussies need to aspire too

Intersting too in regards to his opinion on 20:20 cricket. Many Aussie cricketers are not nearly as enamored with that form of the game. If he reflects the feeling of other Kiwi cricketers, that may well be a form of the game they will come to dominate in years to come

Yes. It always seems easier to like the self-effacing rather than the self-publicising. Given how much more important cricket is in other countries compared to NZ, even an international New Zealand cricketer doesn't get as much attention as some of his less illustrious collegues over the ditch. Hard to become obsessed with onesself if you're never going to get in the media anyway!!

I wonder if the popularity of the game in New Zealand is due to the fact that NZ had Max Cricket before 20:20. Compared to Max Cricket (with its 'maximum hitting zones' and so forth), 20:20 is a test match!! I think before NZ can dominate 20:20, they need to find a big hitter with a decent enough technique (a la Matthew Hayden in the World Cup just gone). It certainly seems that test cricket is dying here a lot quicker than in England or Australia.
