Shah and Bopara have to be musts. So too Swann, Broad and Tremlett.

I agree that Shah, Bopara, Broad and Tremlett should be well supported for inclusion but Swann is by no means certain despite a very good year. All-rounders have to shake off the "bits-and-pieces player" tag. As a right-arm off-break bowler he may not be an effective strike bowler at Test level.

Right, here's my team at the moment - it'll probably change very quickly after some discussion but then thats the point isn't it.

1. JL Denly (Kent) - okay, I've put my reservations aside for a minute here. He did play a few games in 2006 as well (and hit a couple of fifties), and has had a superb breakthrough season this year. Is also a handy leg-spinner, who can claim Warne himself as one of his victims.
2. PJ Horton (Lancashire) - classy batsman, and very solid. Whilst Lancashire's top order often crumbled, Horton was the only one to put up a hesistance on most occasions. Dependable.
3. MA Carberry (Hampshire) - I was always annoyed at the lack of opportunities he got at Kent. Now at Hampshire, he's making the most of it.
4. OA Shah (Middlesex) - 'nuff said. Solid run-machine, as ever.
5. RS Bopara (Essex) - again, 'nuff said. Already has ODI honours, should break into the Test side soon, I'd have thought.
6. AU Rashid (Yorkshire) - Batting all-rounder. Willing to overlook the poor bowling average owing to the fact that this season has been exceptionally bad for spin bowlers.
7. JS Foster / TR Ambrose - keeper. Not fussed which.
8. SCJ Broad (Leicestershire) - future England hope, useful with the bat makes him the obvious number eight.
9. K Ali (Worcestershire) - Much as I hate the idea... he has had a good year.
10. CE Shreck (Nottinghamshire) - Couple of good seasons of late for him.
11. G Onions (Durham) - Sharp bowler, could be another England bowler from the Durham stables.

Just thought I'd point out the glaring ommision from admin's list of bowling averages 23 year old Naqqash Tahir who managed amdst the total shambles down at Edgebaston the highly respectable figures of 25 wickets at 27.26 (econ 2.9, sr 57.2) from his 11 (mostly rain affected) games. Now whilst I wouldn't put him ahead of the Kabir's, Onions', Harris', Broad's e.t.c of this world he is definitely one of the most underrated young English bowlers out there and if only he was blessed with a couple of yards more pace and a stronger frame that wouldn't keep breaking down he would very much be in the England frame. Hopefully working week in week out with someone of the calibre of AD allied to a season free of injuries can turn the enormous potential that we've only seen glimpses of into something more substantial.

Good pickup, engssmoothcriminal. I hope there aren't anymore omissions. I've inserted Tahir's batting and bowling stats in the above tables. At 5'10", I wonder whether he'll be overlooked for England honours due to a large supply of taller quicks?

My WAT England A team:

Joe Denly (RHB - Kent) 21y
Paul Horton (RHB - Lancashire) 25y
Owais Shah (RHB - Middlesex) 28y
Michael Carberry (LHB - Hampshire) 27y
David Sales (RHB - Northamptonshire) 29y
Ravi Bopara (RHB - Essex) 22y
Tim Ambrose+ (RHB - Warwickshire) 24y
Tim Bresnan (RHB/RA-MF - Yorkshire) 22y
Graeme Swann (RHB/RA-OB - Nottinghamshire) 28y
Stuart Broad (LHB/RA-FM - Leicestershire) 21y
Chris Tremlett (RHB/RA-MF) - Hampshire) 26y

After researching the major candidates I've ommitted many players from last years WAT team who had average or poor seasons by their standards. From last year's team I ommitted Nick Compton, Scott Newman, Michael Yardy, Ed Joyce, James Foster and Adil Rashid. Sajid Mahmood is not qualified due to having played more than 5 Test matches. Adil Rashid was rushed into the side last year as the specialist spinner based on half a season. I disagreed with his selection then as being too hasty and I think I was proven correct this year. I feel Rashid is developing into a batting all-rounder and could take the #6 batting spot in the future. However, Ravi Bopara seems to have that spot for some time unless he is disqualified for playing too many Test matches.

Once again, due to a lack of experienced openers, I had to choose from a pool of young players. Denly and Horton impressed this year but could easily turn in poor seasons next year. A consistent opener is hard to find. On the otherhand, there is no shortage of good middle-order bats to choose from. Owais Shah has bounced back from an indifferent year last year and I think is ready for Test cricket. Michael Carberry has steadily improved and deserves his selection this year. David Sales is Mr Consistency and will be too old for consideration next year. His middle-order position will be keenly contested next year by Hildreth, Edwards and Patel.

There is no shortage of good batsmen-keepers either. Foster is still a force but I think it's time to look for a younger man. Tim Ambrose, at 24y, should be a strong contender to replace Prior if and when that player's England career comes to an end. Tim Bresnan is my choice for third seamer. He's a proven bowling all-rounder who willl strengthen the lower-order.

England is still undersupplied with quality specialist spinners. Rashid is primarily a batting all-rounder. That leaves Batty and Swann to choose from. Both had good seasons but Swann gets my vote as the younger of the two players. He will also be qualified next year unless he plays a few Test matches.

The two main strike bowlers are Stuart Broad and Chris Tremlett from last years team. Both have impressed at International level and I'm sure both will figure in a few Test matches in the near future.

Kabir Ali and Adil Rashid can consider themselves unlucky not to make my side this year.

Adil Rashid has been one of the outstanding success stories of 2007: the PCA ratings make him the 7th most valuable player in this year's County Championship!

First look at how his batting:

A U Rashid 15 21 4 790 108 46.47 1 7 8 0
Rashid held his own in comparison with Younis Khan... one of the most successful Test batsmen in the world (with a Test average of 48.98).

Now look at his return for the season as part of the Yorkshire line-up:
Code:
Name O M R W Avge Best 5w 10w

Younus Khan 85.5 10 342 8 42.75 4-52 0 0
Note first that despite his youth and inexperience... he's been their senior bowler this season: the 40 wickets is awesome... but check out just how much Yorkshire relied on this youngster: 412.2 overs in 15 matches means he was trusted throughout and never really protected.

Compare Rashid's season with those of a couple of other leg-spinners... including the newly resurgent Schofield, whose "Excellent domestic performances in the 2007 season saw him called up for the England Performance Programme in the winter of 2007-08" and who "was rewarded for his success in 2007 with a new two-year contract at Surrey"...

Sure... Warne obviously came out better... but considering the comparison is with the greatest exponent of legspin that the world has ever seen... Rashid's figures stand up to comparison (especially as his home wickets were in Yorkshire... hardly known for being receptive to legspin, especially in this of all seasons).

To my mind we've only got five certainties in this year's 'A' team: Shah, Bopara, Swann, Broad and Rashid - and to my mind the balance of the side needs to be arranged so that they all play, rather than decided in advance.

ps. I'm fully expecting Rashid to be the third spinner for the forthcoming Test series in Sri Lanka: in the event of injury to Panesar or of Swann's current injury not clearing up... I'd expect him to play.
