| WAT England 'A' 2007 - nominations time Right folks: the season is over and we're at selection time for the World-A-Team England 'A' side of 2007. At this stage I want nothing more than declarations of interest from those wanting to participate and nominations for key contenders: if you think there's an opening batsman, middle order batsman, batsman who can bowl, gloveman, bowler who can bat or specialist bowler who should be shortlisted... please make the nomination in this thread. Nominations could just be names.... but in an ideal world you should present the player's averages for the recently ended season... plus a comment on previous seasons... and an argument for taking the player seriously as a candidate. Players should have figured prominently this season, should be under 30 years of age and should have played no more than 6 Tests (or have not played a Test in the last 2-3 seasons). In due course I shall start polls on assorted threads to whittle nominations down to a shortlist of front-runners. ps. What one has done to demand a place should count for at least as much as any judgement of "promise": this side can accomodate both seasoned county pros and interesting academy talents... but the former should hold SOME promise... and the latter should have done more than look promising! | Unfulfilled potential is a sobering article that proves that potential is not enough to predict a successful international career. Temperament is equally important and maturity, I think, can improve temperament. Think carefully, before selecting players in their teens or have not demonstrated a measure of consistency. The trouble with the Young Cricketer of the Year Award is that it's based on one good season. One good season is not enough, in my opinion, to judge players for inclusion in the WAT A side. Look for players with a track record of constant improvement and consistency. I think players with those qualities will stand a good chance of adapting to the class and rigours of Test cricket. |

| The thing with Denly is; there is a large fear from the Kent membership (myself included) that he'll suffer the usual second-seasonitis. Opponents are going to know where his weaknesses lie, and add on his late-season loss of form - there is sufficient cause for concern. That said, I still feel he is worthy of inclusion - just that he should not be an automatic choice. Other choices: Ambrose or Mustard will be an interesting one, Rashid could well get in, but has he done enough with the ball to merit an all-rounder spot, and is he good enough to get in as a specialist bat? Bresnan - again, has he done enough with the ball for an all-rounder spot?

| adamberry, I think you raise an important point that some players can have a bad year after a good year and, I think, one of the reasons could be that the opposition have worked out their weaknesses and are exploiting them. A player may seem to be inconsistent but the real reason for loss of form is that the opposition have worked them out. That's why I prefer to pick players who have at least a couple of good seasons consecutively. So, I'll be looking at last season's form as well as this season's form when choosing my candidates. |

| I haven't much time tonight but in addition to those mentioned I'll name the same players I named in the build-up thread: Billy Godleman, Neill Edwards, Owais Shah, Ed Joyce, +Phil Mustard, Stuart Broad, Mark Davies, Chris Tremlett. |

| Id suggest adding a few of these to the shortlist David Sales (I know I suggest him every year but he scores a lot of runs every year), James Hildreth (If you want Neil Edwards...), Samit Patel, Paul Horton, Tim Lungley. Thats about all I can think of at the moment, it could be a struggle to get up to a shortlist this year, maybe settle for a micro-list. |

| Paul Horton - seconded Statto. I saw him towards the end of August and he did look a classy act. Easily as good, if not better than Stuart Law...
