One to watch - Chris Jordan (Surrey, WI)

Chris Jordan sounds an interesting West Indian prospect...
Quote:
Generating genuine pace with the smoothest of actions, this young man was born to bowl [...] What sets Jordan apart from a lot of young speedsters is that he already looks like the finished article. He has command of line and length, an ability to work batsmen over – and out – and the capacity to dig deep on flat wickets [...] Clive Lloyd, the former West Indies captain, who is still an influential man in West Indies cricket, watched him bowl at the Oval and many shrewd judges believe he could stroll into the West Indies national side now as a bowling all-rounder.
One slight worry though: I'm in full agrement with the following comment:

A sure bet for for the next WI WAT 'A' side?

I haven't a lot of time at the moment, but I'll say this: I have seen him bowl, and the top quote is accurate. But I'd rather see him playing for England than the West Indies.

Stop taking the naive pills Rachael. If he is over here and playing for Surrey then he will end up playing for England if he is any good.A sad fact but that is what will happen.I hope he plays for West Indies but if he was going to play for them what is he doing playing for Surrey under an English contract?

Speaking on TMS, Alec Sewart has just dubbed Chris Jordan the best young player he's seen since Graham Thorpe.

I didn't get the whole discussion... but it arose following discussion of the current Surrey game where Ramps has just racked up his 100th hundred. Jordon is playing... but doesn't appear to have been setting the world alight (and his season doesn't look that special at this juncture: 6 matches, and in 7 innings he's scored 102 runs a 20.4 whilst bowling 131 overs and taking 10 wickets at 46.6).

I saw him playing for Surrey in a recent T20 (could have been pro 40) match on Sky and the commentators were talking about him. I can't remember exactly what was said, but my understanding was, that he IS a West Indian player and someone in the WI setup asked someone in the Surrey setup if they could take him for a few seasons and see how he got on.

I don't know on what basis he's over here though, whether as an overseas player, a Kolpak or by virtue of passport. It wasn't my understanding that he was over here to qualify for England. In any case, from what I saw of him he had decent pace but was wayward, promising batsman too.

So the guy has talent and is a promising all rounder, but he's got a way to go yet in my opinion before he gets anywhere near the International stage, although he may sneak in to one of the shorter formats.

Talking of WI players qualifying to play for England, did you know that Dwayne Smith is doing exactly that?
