Target WI

There has already been several posts about your chances and predections, openers and many other things. Lets start another with what should be our target for this upcoming tour. I'll point out here what I think should be our targets. All kinda addition, criticism, explanation and question are welcome.

Win: For the ODI series, our target should be to win all three of them. Well, I know, u know, and all of us know that it will not happen. But we should not take any diffensive approach in order to have a better looking lose. We need to be offensive even if that means a huge defeat. Hopefully that will bring us one win.

400+ Runs: What a coincidence. Our highest team total is the same as our opponent's one mam's total! No good! We need to get rid of it. Since the first test we never went beyond 400. At least one of the four innings in test should have that.

A Diffensive approach to win a Test: I can't think that a test win will come in this tour. But, if we don't try, it will never come. Still what I think is, if we have a choice of secure draw, we should go for it. We should not risk too much for a test win, as oppose to ODI.

Focus on Captain: Because we had a win, and the team performance was impressive during ZIM tour, Bashar's captency and performence went quite unnoticed. I mean, it would have been discussed much more otherwise. Including everything, his performance, Rafique incidence, batting lineup and bowling handling, I can't give him a grade more than F- (F minus). Yeah I'm keeping in mind his innings in the winning match. But he was no where near his ability or what he should have been done. Its time for him to show that he deserve to be the captain of the team.

Opening Pair: Having four opening candidate in 18 member team making it hard for us to guess who will open where. It is quite sure that rana will open ODI as suggested by Whatmore, and keeping Javed Omar in the test squad asserts that he'll open tests. Now, who will be their partners? I think it is a bad idea to decide it on the game night because players don't get chance for mental preparation. Its time for us to stop experiment on opening and set a fixed pair for each type of game, ODI and test. No, I don't have any suggestion here because this task is not easy and Dr. Z's whole thread is here for that.

Get Prepared For longer Innings: Our players have problem playing longer innings does not matter where. Domestic or ODI or Test we don't get long innings. This needs to be ended now. I'd like to see some centuries from our top order. It is even more important for ODI since we have only one century there. This is really bad that we've played so many ODIs and don't have centuries. Players have the ability, but they don't have the mentality. Sumon has to be real careful there. Not only that he can be a good inspiration for them, but also he can have negative impact. If he keeps throughing his wicket racklessly after getting set, this could set a bad example for the team and other players might start to follow it unconciously.

Bangladesh squad
Habibul Bashar (capt), Rajin Saleh, Hannan Sarkar, Shahariar Hossain, Mohammad Ashraful, Alok Kapali, Mushfiqur Rahman, Khaled Mahmud, Khaled Mashud (wk), Mohammad Rafique, Manjural Islam, Faisal Hossain, Tapash Baisya, Tareq Aziz, Abdur Razzaq.

Lets hope for the best.

He might turn out to be successful....You never know in cricket...I never expected Harmison to do so well and neither did I expect Lara to score 400....

I'm sure he will succesful, in general terms and he's an excellent bowler. I just don't think he'll get much joy from the WI picthes.

Even though Bangladesh have improved quite a bit in test matches, i believe they still need more practise in batting. Their ability to hit boundaries is woeful, especially for Odi's. So the reason why all batsmen are falling patheticly is because they get bogged down thinking they have to score fast and playing rash strokes. I feel Whatmore should have the player's working on the arm strength in training, and tell them to play patiently but positively. So by working on their arm strength, they'll be able to hit boundaries and thus put the bad ball away, which is something they are pretty poor at doing in ODI's, and maybe they'll start posting some 200+ scores.

i´d have gone for rafique too miles. but this rana is worth keeping an eye on i think.

as for the above post on their batting- of course you´re right but rana and saleh are making strides and bashar will return to form at some point (he´s a good bat) too.
