hi rhett,

imo, zimbabwe invested in education like few other countries with the result that there are many, many competent zimbabweans who could turn zimbabwe around given the opportunity.

the brain drain has been completed (almost) but many in the diaspora have an eye on events (even the ones who claim they don't will be pretty informed when questioned) in zimbabwe...the term 'brain gain' is not absolutely out of the question but for now it's VERY optimistic.

gtg but...

the above is political but it's very, very hard not to separate it from cricket in zim.

anyway - they're a long way off a test return but there are some good signs...beating BD was one. mufimbisi is another. i think sibanda is finding his feet against some good quality bowling (WI and today, v. SA, he's played very nicely). In all i think the standard is off but there is some hope.

btw, the interest is soo limited a thread didn't cme up for the 1st ODI against SA

here's what i hope is the future of zim:

Zimbabwe 201/7 (50 ov)
South Africa 33/3

South Africa RR 3.47
Required RR 4.17
Zimbabwe RR 4.02 ... well, that'd be nicer if it read 6.02

Can we help Zim?...

Way back when...when Zimbabwe was still Rhodesia, they were part of our domestic set-up. We could go back to that. These are some suggestions flying around in SA:

1: SA has 6 franchise teams, and we could "divide" some of their top players into these franchises.
2: Zim can have at least one team, made up from their best players, in our domestic competition.

Right now, there is no domestic set-up in Zim at all...And without that, where will the next group of cricketers for Zim come from?

ok - yes in fact i did know that situatin existed and it sounds promising that there is even talk of it in SA...as i said, school cricket (used to?) be huge in zim and clearly most of the current crop are almost straight from there.

Sorry butch-lee, but these "talks" are completely informal...No-one in the top brass of SA cricket will come out and make these kind of suggestions openly...It's the kind of thing that gets discussed behind closed doors at ICC meetings

i supposed as much but even informally - if you're talking about it, they must have at least thought about it.
